6/4/2023 0 Comments All summer in a day story![]() ![]() No matter when you arrive, the recipe for success is pretty simple. Once those roads are open - which might not be until July or August this year - you’ll have more options, and traffic circulation in the valley is likely to ease greatly. If you can’t get to the valley on a weekday, consider waiting until later in the summer, when snowplows have cleared and opened Tioga Road (the park’s eastern gateway) and Glacier Point Road (which connects the valley to Glacier Point and Half Dome views). ![]() ![]() Also, for the first time in four years, there’s no reservation requirement for day-trippers to the park this summer, so traffic and parking could be rough. After a brief, partial April closure over flood worries, all that running water remains a risk, and some road and campground closures remained in place as of May 16. With this year’s waterworks, the vistas are doubly staggering.īut with those rewards come challenges for rangers and visitors. The valley was already my favorite portion of my favorite California national park, thanks to Yosemite Falls, Vernal Falls, the Merced River and the great stone face of El Capitan. As May began, more than a dozen falls were coursing from the Sierra into Yosemite Valley, carrying runoff from the snowiest winter in recorded history. Which wonder of the world sounds like a broken faucet? This one, especially now. ![]() ![]() ![]()

All of this can be overwhelming, and when you throw in societal condemnation of some of these identities and/or lifestyles it is especially hard. Most of us spend our whole lives getting to know ourselves, and those initial explorations in our youth are some of the most confusing and painful (and exhilarating and profound) because they are so new. Being a young person is difficult, what with all the changes physical, emotional, and social. How Beautiful the Ordinary, edited by Michael Cart, is a welcome addition to the small but growing collection of young adult fiction exploring gender identity and sexual orientation. Adding to this style of storytelling is the debut book by JM Holmes “How Are You Going to Save Yourself?” which follows the stories of four black men living in Rhode Island as they progress through the tricky stages of young adulthood. Some examples of books like this are “Send Me” by Patrick Ryan, “Anything is Possible” by Elizabeth Strout, “All That Man Is” by David Szalay, “Vertigo” by Joanna Walsh, “Sour Heart” by Jenny Zhang and “The Shore” by Sara Taylor. ![]() The effect can be really powerful in how it shows a multifaceted view of a story. This sort of book probably occurs for practical reasons when the author initially started writing short stories and then groups them together with some connecting characters (since novels traditionally sell better than collections of short stories.) But I think this form allows an opportunity for the author to explore many different perspectives or themes using different narrative styles and points of view. Sometimes I feel like fiction that falls somewhere between short stories and a novel is my favourite kind of writing. ![]() 6/2/2023 0 Comments Green eggs and![]() ![]() Consequently, I often begin by asking the children in the audience to tell me something they have gotten their parents to try that the parents were sure they would not like, for example, marshmallow fluff, or bungee jumping. (Kids love to hear themselves over a microphone!) This portion of the program ranges from 5 minutes to 30 minutes, depending on whether or not any other piece is programmed with Green Eggs and Ham. I go out into the audience with a hand-held microphone and talk directly to the children and parents. Although Green Eggs and Ham can be performed as a purely musical/theatrical event I always precede the musical performance with an interactive session with the audience. ![]() |
